While You’re in Quarantine – Sharpen Those Skills

While You’re in Quarantine – Sharpen Those Skills!

Close to 40 million people have filed for unemployment during the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent shutdown. While many jobs will return as the economy reopens, the criteria for rehiring, and the jobs that companies deem essential, will certainly shift.  Having skills beyond those basic degrees required to apply for positions will be the differentiator between those who go back to work and those who continue to seek employment.

Quarantine is the perfect time to sharpen your skills and gain some new ones.

Put yourself in the shoes of an interviewer.  They need to fill a role, they’re seeing record numbers of applicants, you walk in and say you’ve got the background and for the past 3 months you’ve been helping around the house, picking up some Postmates shifts and learning to macramé. Or, you come into the interview and say that, after learning to macramé, you realized you wanted to get better, so you enrolled in an e-learning course and sharpened up your skills in X, Y or Z. Being able to show that you’ve learned a new skillset of practical elements of the job you’re applying for makes you a more attractive candidate.  And sharing that you’re excited to put that knowledge to practical use with a new team lets the company know that you are a motivated person.

So, ask yourself, who does the interviewer hire?

The e-learner, of course.  The grit, passion, and work ethic it shows to have taken initiative in these uncertain times is a major differentiator, showing that you have character, drive to become better at your existing skills, as well as discipline, maturity, curiosity, passion, and a willingness to learn new things. These skills are invaluable to employers looking for the best employees.

Quarantine, unemployment, being furloughed all can be emotional, difficult, and trying, but if you choose to invest in yourself with greater education opportunities you are sure to come out ahead of the pack.

At TGG University, we  offer an Introduction to Accounting course.  This course sharpens your skills and introduces concepts that will make you a better team member, a better accountant and a more attractive prospect.  With small class sizes and real-world examples you are in an environment where your skills will grow and your understanding will flourish.

So, while you’re in quarantine, use the time to sharpen your skills, become your best self and create the best future for yourself. Check out the Intro to Accounting Course HERE.
